Well, it's obvious I know a whole lot more about food than fitness. No one would confuse me with an athlete of any kind. The last sport I played was co-ed softball, and I managed to find a way to get injured in every game. I went to Michigan State, which is one of the geographically largest campuses in the US. I didn't have a car and I walked everywhere with no complaint. Of course that was more years than I'd like to remember but why can't I do that now? Well, the more years than I can remember have a little to do with that, but the extra pounds explain the rest. But I did carry my Walkman everywhere back then.
Getting out there and moving is something that's necessary to my overall goal and the last thing I want is to end up weighing a whole lot less and having the same amount of skin and muscle under all that.
I decided that walking is the best way to get started for me. I have a dog, so he obviously enjoys it, and with bad knees it seems like the safest place to begin. I've gotten out there a couple days a week, but I was bored. Then I realized what I was missing; music! So I started looking around for something that I could listen to on my walks. I don't get to listen to the radio nearly as much as I'd like, and I was feeling kind of out of touch. So if I got an iPod, I was sure I'd end up with oldies and be bored in no time. XM . About a hundred channels of whatever kind of music or talk you'd care to listen to. And they have portable and mobile players now. Even better, I found a pink one! The Pioneer inno is both an XM player and an mp3 player. And you can record XM to listen to whenever. The pink version also donates a little to Susan G. Komen. So I'm in! And since I love a bargain, I did some shopping and found one for $144 with a $50 rebate for the player and another $50 XM rebate for new subscribers. Yep, I got this player for $44! It comes with a home dock and antenna, and I can plug it into my bedroom stereo. It has a cute little remote control which kind of cracks me up, and there's a car kit you can buy for it too. It works great. The only problem is that when it's mobile, it gets a little flakey on reception. There are some headphones with antenna in them, and all the reviewers recommended them but I haven't given those a try yet. It works great for me to just listen to mp3s when the XM doesn't want to tune in. I love it. And it's gotten me out on the road again. We don't have the inno in our store, but the Samsung Helix is the same little gem; it just doesn't come in pink. Now get out there and get moving! |
