Eggos or ice cream cones?
One of the things I think about when I hear Eggos is that satisfying sound of soft sizzling in the toaster oven when they're nearly done (mmmmsaturated fat!). They come out crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside. That being said, these Eggos are really not much like their original counterparts; they're just the same shape. We're not of the mind that all change is bad, though so read on to hear what we have to say on these little numbers.
One more odd thing of note, for some reason Kellogg decided that a serving of these is three Eggos. It's odd for a few reasons. These come in a ten pack...so the servings don't even out. A toaster has two slots, and I think most normal people would consider a serving either one or two waffles. Their other waffles are a serving size of two waffles. And from a practical marketing standpoint, why make the serving bigger than most would count as a serving? It makes the calories look bigger than they are. Ok, now on with the review! The Pros: I have trouble saying bad things about a 60 calorie, practically no fat waffle I can cook in my toaster. They're quick, they look like Eggos, and they're easy. But the Eggo shape is a bit of a trick because I can't seem to taste the Eggo in them. Not they're bad, but they're just way different. I would liken these to the flavor of a regular ice cream cone, with the texture of a normal Eggo. Which makes them a little odd, but something I could get used to. We tried them with just Land O' Lakes light butter, but they could have used some light syrup or cinnamon sugar to spice them up a bit (or we're weird--PB2 and cinnamon; yum!). I'd rather have my regular Eggos but these will do as a substitute. The Cons: These could use a little flavor pep up. They're not cardboard by any means, but some notes of vanilla, or even go all the way and make some flavored waffles in the Special K formula. I can see these being good as blueberry flavored or cinnamon. They just seem to be missing a little something. But doctored up a bit, and these will make a good addition to your breakfast table. The Skinny: On balance, we like em. But don't expect to bite into a crunchy Eggo like working mom used to make. They're not the same. Dress these up and enjoy their nearly fat free goodness. The Stats: Serving size: 3 waffles. 190 calories, 1 g fat (0 saturated and trans), 400 mg sodium, 37 g carbs, 1 g fiber, 4 points.
