gnu foods mixed results on the flavorFiber?  Absolutely.  Flavor...?

Let me preface this by saying we almost always agree with Hungry Girl on what's good in the world of diet food.  And we still sort of do on this one, but we have to say our tastes do slightly differ here so we thought we should throw our two cents in.

Gnu Foods has these fiber bars that they hold out as Chocolate Brownie Bar .  Now maybe this is just a case of the name holding too much promise for me.  A chocolate brownie is normally chocolatey, chewy, sweet and squishes in your mouth.  So when Hungry Girl raved about these, we didn't hesitate to order some.  We didn't find them in our local stores, so we dropped an order on the website and salivated until our order arrived.

The Pros:  We ordered the chocolate brownie, the banana walnut, and the cinnamon raisin (they also have orange cranberry).  We couldn't wait to peel into them.  The bars are about double the size of a normal snack bar and they're substantial.  They have about half your daily allowance of fiber (those with sensitive tummies beware--that's a lot of fiber in one shot), and they're only two points.

Of course we started with the chocolate brownie.  We can't really find a pro here, so we'll skip on to the banana walnut.  These are pretty tasty and entirely natural.  Slightly sweet, and have a good texture.  The cinnamon raisin are good too--tasty, and packed with the fiber it's hard for us picky eaters to work into the day.

The product arrived very quickly and it was nice and fresh from the factory.  They have a program where you can have auto-shipments set up if you decide these work into your daily menu.  I'm sure they have them at finer health food stores near you, but where I am that wasn't the case.

The Cons:  If you enjoy cocoa-flavored bird seed, these are the bars for you.  I've never met a brownie that had whole grains sticking out of it.  Let's just say brownie and millet are not a good combo.  And I've never tasted a brownie that had quite this flavor.  I think a little reworking of the formula or the name on these is in order.  I was surprised at how the rave I read about these didn't match them at all.  Steer clear of the chocolate brownie bar.  Not good.  No matter how hungry I get, choking another one of these down is not an option.  Carb watchers, these bars are not for you.

We had trouble finding them locally; that's the only other con we have.  The quick shipping from their site made up for that.

The Skinny:  Setting aside the brownie bars (don't get the brownie bars!), these are a good way to get in your daily fiber and enjoy a filling snack.  They'd be a good breakfast; the bars are substantial and most of them taste good.  As a snack, it'd even be satisfying to have half a bar and then you've only spent one point on something that will give you 6 g of fiber and keep you full for a little while longer than say, the pretzels you'd reach for.  If you're looking for fiber , these bars are where it's at.

The Stats:
